A letter to hair on the Cape Flats – Swirl is about a young hairdresser faces life’s big questions when she goes up against her mentor, threatened by her passion and skill for hair. This, while she begins to question all the damage caused by not accepting herself for who she truly is.
Nominated for “Best Made for TV Movie” at the BAFTA’s in 2021.
Objective
Swirl - Raven Hair Academy Logo & Prop Design
Swirl revolves around Raven, a highly respected and leading hairstylist academy, which is led by the film’s cunning and competitive antagonist. The Art Director of Swirl approached me, tasking me with designing a logo that not only embodies the fiery personality of the antagonist but also captures the essence of a top-notch hairstylist academy, incorporating hair elements and other relevant concepts.
Additionally, I was responsible for the design of various brand props, including exam papers, signage, and even a mock website for the protagonist that would help her search for a suitable premises for her new venture.
The goal was to craft a branding experience that evokes the academy’s values and communicates their mission, in a way that is both memorable and unique. Working closely with the Swirl team, we were able to successfully deliver an exceptional branding campaign that exceeded their expectations.
